Can coaching tools help me with my career development?

ree

I’ve found a number of tools work for me and my clients when we are considering our career development.

These are tools that I've come across and used personally for myself, with a coach or with clients. They helped me and I believe that they can help you. Not all tools work for everyone and it can be trial and re-direction.

SWOT Analysis

Identify your Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats in relation to your career goals.

Goal Setting

I love SMART goals (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound).  Think about this in terms of your career aspirations and work through each goal to bring granularity.  Once you have this build back up to the overall goal, what are the steps you need to take to get there?

Wheel of Anything

Another favourite of mine!  This can be adapted to fit the challenge or topic you want to focus on, for example the ‘wheel of career’.  This is a very visual tool and works well for people who like to visualise their thoughts.

Values

Another one I love (there’s a theme here!)

Here we want to consider your core values and align them with you career choices.  I am a huge advocate of this approach.  I believe that many people leave organisations and roles because they haven’t thought about what they really want, what sort of company they want to work for and what is really important to them about that company.

Networking Strategies

Yes, you’ve guessed it, another favourite of mine!  Interestingly this has only become a favourite recently as networking used to really set me on edge.

I’ve shared before that I was given advice a long time ago in my career about the importance of networking which I didn’t take too seriously before and ironically now I help people work through their network and making the most of it and, I enjoy networking myself.

There are lots of different ways you can network and it’s important to find the right route at the right time for you.

Skill Gap Analysis

Looking at what our skills are and what we need to progress through our desired career is important to help us gain some focus.  Once we identify our strengths and gaps we can work on continued strength or developing our skills.  We can look at how we are going to go about this and start to map out our timeline.
